During the retreats of March and April 1918, many tanks had to be abandoned; their crews removed the Lewis guns and fought on as infantry. Here three tanks lie where their crews left them. A flamethrower is used to fight the tank that can be seen just above the smoke. A tank moves through the German barrage, most likely taken on a training area behind the lines after the tank was captured. A carefully posed photograph of the same tank, supposedly on fire after being hit; probably achieved by the use of smoke grenades.

By flying reconnaissance missions over this sector of the front and making the French think they would attack here, the Germans kept much needed reinforcements away from the other fronts where they were attacking. The troops arrived and were pleased with the front which, apart from a few raids, was quite quiet; the landscape was beautiful compared to the crater-strewn landscape of Flanders. But late in April the troops began to notice suspicious movement behind the German lines. There was great activity at night, sounds of marching troops and the rumble of wagons, and in No Man’s Land working parties could be heard whispering to each other.
