His manufacturing career began in 1827, when he hired on at a button factory in nearby Southington. He worked for a time at another button factory in Waterbury, and then, in 1828, at Patrick Lewis’s coffee-mill factory in Meriden. Meriden would be his home for the remainder of his life. According to an obituary published in The Sporting Goods Dealer in 1902, Charles Parker’s first venture as an independent manufacturer began in December 1829 with a thirteen-month contract to make coffee mills. His operating capital comprised $70, saved from earlier wages.
