His manufacturing career began in 1827, when he hired on at a button factory in nearby Southington. He worked for a time at another button factory in Waterbury, and then, in 1828, at Patrick Lewis’s coffee-mill factory in Meriden. Meriden would be his home for the remainder of his life. According to an obituary published in The Sporting Goods Dealer in 1902, Charles Parker’s first venture as an independent manufacturer began in December 1829 with a thirteen-month contract to make coffee mills. His operating capital comprised $70, saved from earlier wages.

I’ve done a fair amount of research on the guns over the past twenty-five years, but there are people around who know a whole lot more about Parkers than I do. I certainly didn’t discover the existence of the No. ½ frame, but apparently I was the first to talk about it in print, in the original edition of this book. I learned of the No. ½ frame only because a dear old friend happens to own one, and when I realized I was dealing with something I hadn’t seen before, or even seen mentioned, I enquired among the most advanced Parker collectors I know and among knowledgeable dealers.

55295—a GH Grade 12-bore purchased December 12, 1888, by Chicago sporting-goods dealer Hibbard, Spencer & Bartlett. Through the last decade of the nineteenth century, the product line expanded. The new hammerless guns were in full production, and the company continued to build hammer guns as well. Hammer guns, in fact, remained in limited production at Parker until about 1917—and were available on special order as late as 1920. By 1899, there were twenty-three Parker grades in all, nine hammerless and fourteen hammer guns.
