2 Before 1500 Myths and Le~ends A myth is a story with archetypal characters, usually gods or great heroes, that explains some fact or phenomenon of life or culture. The truly ancient crafts, such as smithery and weaving, have a place in myths the world over, but there is no ancient myth about knitting. Myths are older than knitting, which fmds its way only very sparingly into . legend, and then usually romantically and trivially. The supposed Yemeni story, mentioned by Mary Thomas, ofEve in the Garden of Eden knitting the pattern on the serpent's back, illustrates the point.

Richard Braithwaite (15881673) was born near Kendal and educated at Oxford. He is believed to have served in the King's army during the Civil War. He wrote much, but is best known for Bamabae Itinerarium (1638), a long travelogue of England in rhymed Latin verse. He translated it himself as Drunken Barnaby's Four Journeys, published in diglot editions. Of Askrigg in Wensleydale he wrote: VeniAskrig, notumforum, valde tamen indecorum. Nullum habet magistratum oppidanumferre statum. Hicpauperrimi textores peragrestes tenent mores.

Here again hosiery is significant: the guetres or footless stockings worn over wooden clogs in the French Pyrenees, the footless halfsocks or calf-bands of men on Gran Canaria, and the leggings of some Greeks. The nineteenthcentury fishermen's jersey, though strictly endemic to an occupation, was effectively regional. Where there is a local or national knitting tradition, it belongs to regional dress or standard!
