This broader community should be taken into consideration or you may face unnecessary frustration.

Let’s examine several of the most common types of qualitative data that can be captured, understanding that this is not meant to be a complete list. As you read about these, remember that data sources in action research should be natural complements to your teaching; they should not be artificial add-ons done only for research purposes that interfere with your teaching practice. Student Work Samples, Student Documents Student work is one of the richest sources of qualitative data. Any assignment or activity that involves a student creating a document becomes a potential data source.

If it is information related to your teaching practice, your students’ learning, or anything that might impact that learning, then it is potentially meaningful data. It remains only potentially data, though, until you collect it. That is, until you capture that information in some way so that you can reflect on it, it does not factor into your action research as something that can help you understand how your teaching impacts your learners.
