Girls outnumber boys two to one at Draymill, as many boys attend the local technical school. Students suggest that this puts girls in the dominant position, but then proceed to describe how girls’ movements are restricted by boundaries laid down by boys—with ‘no go’ areas for girls, how boys occupy more than their fair share of ‘airspace’ in the classroom, how teachers respond to the boys first, and how sexual harassment—although rarely named as such— is commonplace and a daily occurrence for some.

They talk a lot more but she believes this enhances the work ethic and progress of the class.
